La Paz and the Carnival Shuttle Service

Booking the Shuttle

The cruise port in La Paz is very commercial and with the exception of a few vendor tents directly off the ship there is nothing to do or walk to unless you book a tour with Carnival or sign up for their shuttle service. This service is only available to be booked once on the ship (you will recieve a note on your cabin door letting you know when reservations open) and it does sell out. At the time of this post (June 2026) the price to reserve the shuttle was $12 per person. 

Coromuel Beach

The shuttle picks you up directly at the cruise port and makes two stops. The first stop is at Coromuel Beach and is about 20 minutes away from the port via a very windy, barren road. Picture shaded seating, kayak and snorkel gear rentals, and crystal clear water. Public restrooms are clean and available at this stop. Five or six small restaurants are located side by side just above the sandy beach and are filled with fresh fruit, ceviches, and giant drinks. Servers from these restaurants will also travel down to the beach to take mobile orders. The beach had a very relaxed, family-friendly vibe. A note of caution, there are no lifeguards at this beach but the clear, calm water allowed us to relax. We especially enjoyed the drinks from La Costa Coromuel. 

The water was cool and the sand was soft. There were a lot of small bait fish close to the shore and we found a Gulf Sea Star which was a species we had not observed before. After investigating closely, we made sure to place the star away from the crowds so that it didn’t get stepped on or hurt. My 18 year old will be studying wildlife biology in the fall so this was a highlight of our trip. 

Downtown La Paz

After the beach, we hopped back on the shuttle (it arrives every 20-30 minutes) and made our way to downtown and the famous Malecon (boardwalk). The shuttle dropped us off right by the boardwalk at their bus terminal which was the perfect location to access the area. This area is filled with restaurants and shops of all types and budgets. This is also where you will find the La Paz sign as well as numerous sculptures lining the boardwalk, making it a perfect stroll. While there is not a traditional beach here, there were small strips to sand to lay out and take a dip. 

La Michoacana Ice Cream Parlor is a La Paz gem and a great stop to cool off after walking the Malecon. This is not your ordinary ice cream shop and features unique flavors of handmade ice cream, palettas, and more. Flavors include tamarind, passion fruit, bubble gum, guanabana, as well as more traditional fresh fruit flavors. The palettas were especially good and made out of fresh, frozen fruit. I had the watermelon and strawberry and felt like a kid again trying to eat 2 popsicles before they melted down my face and arms. 

Heading Back

Once back on the shuttle, it is about a 25-30 minute drive back to the port. The shuttle does not stop at the beach on the way back so it is important to stop there first if you want to visit there. The bus will list the last time that it will depart downtown so that you arrive at the ship in plenty of time. 

La Paz is definitely a cruise destination that we would visit again.
