Carnival Panorama Honest Review — What Families Really Need to Know

By: Jennifer- Lead Navigator & Founder

There are a lot of Carnival Panorama reviews out there. Most of them tell you about the amenities list. This one tells you about the ice cream cone counter, the piano bar surprise, and why debarkation almost ruined an otherwise wonderful trip. Here’s our honest take after sailing from Long Beach with two teenage boys.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS — CALM, NOT CHAOTIC

The moment we boarded the Carnival Panorama the thing that struck me most was how calm it felt. No high energy party atmosphere, no chaos, no feeling of being immediately overwhelmed. If you have ever sailed on a short 3 or 4 night cruise you know exactly the kind of energy I am talking about — this was nothing like that. The Panorama has a relaxed, family friendly vibe that set the tone for the entire trip.

Our first stop as always was the Blue Iguana on the Lido deck for tacos. Fresh made tortillas, generous portions, and the perfect way to start any Carnival sailing. If you haven’t made this your embarkation day tradition yet — start now.

THE SPACES THAT MAKE THIS SHIP SPECIAL

Our favorite spot on the entire ship was Ocean Plaza on Deck 5. It’s a large indoor space with plenty of comfortable seating — the kind of spot that becomes your home base for the week. Trivia, karaoke, dance classes, and just relaxing without being in the sun all happen here. For families who need indoor options or just want somewhere comfortable to gather between activities, Ocean Plaza is the heart of this ship.

The Alchemy Bar is still the best drinks spot on any Carnival ship. Order the Cucumber Sunrise — you can thank me later. And one of our favorite surprises this sailing was discovering that kids under 18 are welcome at the piano bar between 9 and 10pm. Our boys had an absolute blast and the crowd was genuinely welcoming to them. That hour became one of the highlights of the trip.

OUR FAMILY TRADITION: We start an ice cream cone counter on every cruise to see how many soft serve cones the kids can eat by the end of the trip. It sounds silly but it becomes a running joke the whole family looks forward to. Start your own version — cruises are made for little traditions like this.

FOOD — HONEST THOUGHTS

The main dining room food was genuinely impressive this sailing. Carnival has rolled out an upgraded menu across the fleet and the difference is noticeable. The quality has improved and dinner in the main dining room is a highlight rather than an afterthought. The atmosphere is casual — don’t expect formal night levels of elegance — but the food more than delivers.

The Panorama has two separate buffet areas which means more variety and less crowding than a single buffet line. Dinner at the buffet offered similar options to the dining room but felt less fresh — probably a plating and presentation difference more than an actual quality difference. For lunch the buffet is great. For dinner I would choose the dining room every time.

For specialty dining Bonsai Sushi is always a reliable choice. The hibachi is a fun experience but only has two tables so reservations fill up fast — book it as soon as you board. You will be seated with other guests traditional hibachi style so go in knowing that. Guy’s Burgers has the best fries on the ship, full stop.

ACTIVITIES FOR TEENAGERS

Traveling with teenagers on a cruise can be hit or miss. On the Panorama it was a hit. Our boys loved trivia at Ocean Plaza, the ropes course, SkyBike, karaoke, and the piano bar. We also all got massages at the spa together — my 14 year old just needed to be in the same room as dad which worked perfectly. The ship genuinely has enough to keep teenagers busy and happy without the family having to split up constantly.

For younger kids the kids club is excellent. There’s a Cat in the Hat breakfast, a parade, and even a Build-A-Bear at sea experience. The Panorama takes care of every age group.

THE ARCADE — OUR ONE REAL DISAPPOINTMENT

The arcade looks impressive at first glance — it’s larger than on some ships. But there was a mechanical box attached to the floor that was a genuine hazard, and the space had an unpleasant smell. For a ship that gets so much right this felt like a missed opportunity. If the arcade is important to your family go in with lowered expectations.

EMBARKATION AND DEBARKATION — VERY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES

Embarkation from Long Beach was smooth and easy. We were on the ship and eating tacos before we knew it. Debarkation however was a nightmare. Parking is offsite which means you have to shuttle back to your car after leaving the ship. The process was slow, stressful, and made leaving feel even harder than it already does. If you are sailing from Long Beach factor this into your planning — build in extra time and adjust your expectations for the end of the trip.

LONG BEACH HEADS UP: The pools are filled with Pacific Ocean salt water and stay quite cold until you reach Cabo and beyond. If your family is counting on pool days early in the sailing pack accordingly and set expectations ahead of time.

WHO THIS SHIP IS PERFECT FOR — AND WHO IT ISN’T

The Carnival Panorama is ideal for families who want to spend time together without feeling overwhelmed by a massive ship and too many choices. The relaxed vibe, manageable size, and genuinely family friendly atmosphere make it one of the best options for multigenerational travel or families with kids of varying ages and needs.

If you want upgraded amenities, a more refined experience, or a ship with a larger pool this is probably not your match. The port stops on this route are industrial and require travel to reach the real beauty of each destination — if you are traveling with elderly family members or very young children that is worth factoring in.

OUR HONEST RATINGS:
Overall experience: 8/10
Food & dining: 8/10
Activities for teens: 9/10
Ship atmosphere: 9/10
Arcade: 5/10
Debarkation: 4/10
Would we sail again? Yes
